ABS top & bottom layer problems with E3D allmetal hot end

I am a newbie with the E3D hot end so i have a lots of questions, and short time to figure out by myself because I have deadlines to meet.

I have problems with my first and top layers on ABS the fill layers and raft are perfect. the raft sticks really good to the bed. check the pics below:

  The "waffling" that you see in the first picture is usually seen on the first layer of a print when the nozzle is too close to the bed. The plastic does not have enough room and starts to push up away from the bed. A small (1/6 or 1/8 revolution) adjustment of the Z limit adjuster will eliminate "waffling" on the first layer. Please email your .factory file to support@re3d.org and we can verify the setting you are using match the part and machine you have.

  Let me add my 2 cents here, I agree with what Matthew says about the nozzle being slightly to close to the print bed on the first layer. I was experiencing similar problems when I printed parts on my gigabot. I discovered a few things about my machine that made a really big improvement in the quality of my printed parts:

  • Make sure your print bed is level
  • Make sure the surface of the print bed is flat (mine had a variance of +/- 0.025" across the surface even though all 4 corners of the print bed were level) I had to scrape flat the high spots off the surface to bring the surface to +/- 0.005"
  • You may also have a print surface that is not "flat". Judging by the pictures this may be the case as this waffling does not occur everywhere. The areas that are waffling are probably printed over a high spot on your print surface.
  • make sure you level your bed at temperature. (the aluminum surface will change a lot dimensionally from room temperature)
  • Be sure that your cross slide X axis gantry and endplates are square as well that the gantry runs true (parallel with Y axis) My printer had an endplate that was slightly bent and had to straighten it and shim out the one y axis rail
  • I could tell there was something not right with my gantry because during the homing process the one end would hit the stepper motor before triggering the switch mounted on the other end
  • If the gantry is not quite square and running parallel with the Y axis, some binding can occur and the stress can actually overcome the holding torque force of the stepper motors. This will cause the motors to skip and misaligned the print.
